I can't get the collet to close on the bit I'm trying to use. I keep tightening the collet nut but the shaft of the bit seems too small and it can be pulled out easily. Any advice?

I don't know this for sure as I am not there but it sounds like your collet is bigger than your bit. Dremel makes 4 sizes of collets 1/8", 3/32", 1/16", and 1/32". I use the Dremel Chuck Model 4486, in my Dremel, works like a drill chuck. I use the collets in my flex shaft.
But you might check this and see if the collet size is to big which I'm sure it is. Not all kits come with all the collets you can purchase them at your local hardware or Wal-Mart or lots of places were they sell tools. It is Model #4485 package which comes with all 4 collets.

One thing I forgot check to make sure you have a collet in the tool. Take the nut off and make sure the silver thing with 4 splits in the side.

I had the same problem, I then changed to the Demel Chuck #4486 and it worked fine with all sizes of bit shafts.
