It has a lot to do with the type of Gem you want to drill most you will need a diamond drill bit. If it is worth a lot I would take it to a jeweler. A carbide drill bit will drill those with a hardness of 8 or less.

I have a nice rounded , oblong , shaped stone that has multi colors that I want to drill a hole into and shape it for a sort of keyfob. I know it will be heavy but I really want to make it and I want to make it shine. I have the carbide bit and was wondering if it would drill the hole in the stone? The stone is about 3/4" thick. I don't want to ruin the Dremel bit nor the rotary tool drilling a stone. I also want to put a good shine on the stone with my Dremel tool and am wondering what to use for that? I have the felt wheels and the compound. Sorry for the dumb questions...

You REALLY need to know what stone you're working with before you start drilling and shaping it! It sounds like it could be an agate or a jasper. The main thing is that cutting and drilling stones gets hot so you have to use a water bath to keep things cool and keep the trash material from clogging your bits. You also have to know the hardness of your stone in order to select the proper sequence for polishing. Start out too coarse and you leave big scratches that take forever to remove, Start out too fine and you waste a lot of effort getting nowhere! I am new to Dremel but have been using a professional jeweler's flex shaft for several years. PM me if you'd like to talk further!
