You can use an oversized big washer of your size choice with two-sided carpet tape stuck to one side of the washer.  Press the washer with tape side down and presto...you can route without clamps if you are careful.  Good Luck

Have you tried using a holesaw without the pilot hole?

I would use one slightly bigger than 2 inches.  The drill will dance around a little, so I would try to keep the rpm's low on the drill until a groove has been created.

Then, I would use 2 sided tape and to attatch a washer,  that is a great idea!  From there, you just sand the edges down until all of the edges are even with the washer.

That is how I would do it anyways.

Barry.
