Is it possible to use a router bit with the Multi-purpose cutting kit or do I need to buy the Plunger Router Attachment?

I am new to this woodworking thing. Attempting to fix the side rail on an old bed. I need to mortise (I think that is what it is called) the end of wood to accept the brackets. The area I want to cut out is roughly 2 in by 3-1/2 in and roughly 1/4 inch deep. The wood piece I have is 1x8 in. Any suggestions would be helpful. I have the Dremel 4000 which we used to refinish our windows but using it in this manner is new to us.

****o this is Beth from Dremel Customer Service.  You "can" use the "Multipurpose Cutting Kit" to hold your tool and use a "routing" bit in it, however, it's truly not the choice that I would suggest.  The "Plunge Router" is still the best attachment to use when routing because it has a two-handled base that will allow the user to keep the tool under better control.  If you used the Multipurpose cutting kit, YOU are controlling it with one hand which could possibly cause some kickback when performing your task.  Stability is the key here when doing routing.  If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact our Dremel Customer Service line direct on the toll free phone number of 1-800-437-3635, Monday-Friday, 7:00 am - 6:00 pm, CST.  Any of us would be happy to assist you!
