this is puzzling    I have had mine for about a year and a half and have no problems yet. It gets warm , but I have a bad habit of covering the vents so I have to cool it down, but it does everything I ask of it. This the second thread like this today.

I am with you Kodiak. I have had mine for about a year and have had no problems. I have used it for all sorts of projects. That being said, I don't discount the others' stories and can appreciate any frustration they feel.

I hope the others are still contacting Dremel about the issues they are experiencing. While I do not blame them for returning them to Hoe Depot. I am sure that Dremel will take care of the problem. (At least I hope they do.)

Thanks,

Kurgan

I bought the 400 only to have it vibrate very badly even after the brushes were set...then it would spark and stall out and start up again....very frustrating after spending so much money on it!

Carrie C,

Have you called or e-mailed Dremel about the problem? They are very good about taking care of customers problems.

If not, you should at least return it to the store you purchased it from so that you can get your money back. However, trust me, I would try Dremel first.

Good luck.

Thanks,

Kurgan

I'm thinking of buying a 400 XPR myself.

Just out of curiosity, are those of you with the "Smoky & the Dremel" problem using the Flex Shaft?  Perhaps by using the Flex Shaft you would avoid covering the ventilation slots, giving your XPR more air.

Or perhaps not!  The Internet is full of similar horror stories.  It seems as though the Dremel 400 XPR is something out of Mission Impossible: It self-destructs in five seconds!  So, I am currently leaning towards a Dremel 300!

Mine bit the dust last night as well... Black smoke, sparks and motor burned smell included! It is funny how that always happens at store-closing time isn't it?

Anyhow... I rushed to HD and bought a 300 kit just to get out of the crunch and will be calling the service number on Monday to get that fixed replaced.

One grievance I have is that being the 400XPR their 'flagship' rotary tool somehow when we buy new attachments we always have to contact them for either an adapter or nut, or some other small gadget so we can use it. Either make the default fit the 400XPR or include the adapter with the attachment!

Sorry about your bad luck with the XPR400 but they are not junk as I have all the Models including the XPR and have had no problem with any of them.  I will however admit that I still prefer the older 395 model as I am not a fan of the on-off switch on the XPR and I have also complained about the heating up problem.  For everyone's information I am on my second planer attachment for the XPR after wearing out the first one on the same XPR.

Sorry if I came out as agreeing with the "junk" comment.
I love these things and own several different models myself. I was simply venting frustration at the timing things choose to break

I bought a 400 at HDepot, smoked in 5 minutes of use, returned it thinking it was a lemmon, second one lasted 10 mins. returned/refund. I have a 395 thats 10 yrs old and still "mostly" working. What the **** is going on here??

I haven't had any problems with my XPR, have you tried running it wide open for 5 to 10 Min under no load to break in the brushes. I have to agree that I like my 395.
