I do not want to make anyone mad, but I have a 395, a 400, and a 9000 Dremel. Also a Dremel made Craftsman and they all work fine. I have wondered if people are overworking their tools? They are not like a large pro type tool. Now Bosh also owns Rotozip who make a heaver style that might be handy.

After reading the forum I wish my XPR400 was just smoked. I was in my garage this afternoon using an XPR400 with a flex shaft and a cutting wheel to cut the head off a 1/4 soft steel bolt that holds an aluminum cover on a Vespa scooter. I made it 3/4 of the way through the bolt when I heard a pop and looked beside me to see flames shooting about 8 inches from the drive motor. If I hadn't been using the flex shaft I would have been seriously burned by the flames.
I've had my unit for about 4 years now...I've moved since I bought it but may have the original receipt for it...but who knows. My hunch it looks like I'm going to have to just buy another unit and move on, but not before I spread the word among the Burning Man community, and via Twitter to watch out for the flaming XPR 400's. I thought Dremel produced quality products...but the burned up drive motor of my XPR 400 has me wondering...and looking online for competitors to replace the unit with.

| Flaming XPR400? How bizarre! I have one of what was probably one of the first 400 XPRs to have come off the production line and have had ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS with it in the entire time that I have had it(4 years plus?) My tool gets a lot of use: I am a semi-professional wildlife carver and instructor, so my 400XPR gets at least 8-10 hours of use per week. I run it suspended, with a flex shaft, and lubricate the flex shaft weekly. These "exploding tools" certainly seem to be a manufacturing defect and those of you who are returning the tools are doing the right thing. Jim

| Good for you! If DREMEL wants to stay alive as a product, they have got to address any quality control issues as and when they crop up. otherwise, they lose.

If you check out the Tool listings the 4000 is listed, but not the 400. You find the 400 in the discontinued tools.

Partners in DREMEL: I do not design the tools, nor do I build them. I am but an humble end user. But, Personally, back East, I have used a 400 XPR since it first came out; recommended it to a few dozen carving students and continue to use it as a first-line demonstration tool. In short, I like it.
