| I just joined today to give a thumbs up to Dremel on their customer service. The wife sent an email to Dremel on Saturday because I had the same issue with the 400. Just wanted everyone to know that I got a call from Jane Badtke, a customer service rep, yesterday. Today, UPS brought me a brand new 4000! Great customer service.

Thought I'd add my 2 cents. I also have the XPR 400. Today I managed to smoke mine while trimming off some 1/4 inch wood.
As I was cutting the thing just stops and starts shooting sparks out of it. Now it's dead as a door nail.
Reading my booklet, it says I can send it back to Dremel but I am supposed to provide my "proof of purchase"....which I'm guessing they mean the receipt....well unfortunately I do not have mine anymore...I know I paid $69 for it at Wal Mart about a year ago.

I had mine about 3 years then it died with a puff of white smoke. I sent an email to Customer Service but have not heard back in over a week of waiting, going on 2 weeks. Not very responsive.
I will try calling when they open and maybe I can get some help that way.
I loved the tool up until that time. It ran hot but I just made sure I kept my hands away from the vents.

I had this same problem. A friend bought me the Dremel, it was the newer one (Newer 4 years ago though) it came with the case with a bunch of attachments and etc.
I got a year or so of use out of it before I was cutting small toilet seat bolts with it when a puff of smoke and a burned up motor. Now, I have put MANY MANY hours of MUCH more strenuous use on my older 395 Type 5 model, and the windings in the armature aren't even discolored from heat. In fact, I have almost used up a set of brushes for it, and I have had to repair the cord for it. It's my Go-to machine and it works.
I think the newer units have an issue with this sudden burning up.
