I just bought my first Dremel set yesterday, a 300-series:
http://tinyurl.com/mkc8dx

I cut a 1x4 piece of pine into small 2.25 inch rectangles (1x4x2.25) and tried to sand with my Dremel sanding attachment. What a mess! The block was very uneven and had unattractive gouges by the end -- I ended up just using sand paper to fix it.

I've poked around this forum to look for sanding techniques for absolute beginners, but it seems like a lot of people have been doing woodworking for a while. This is the first time I've tried such a project since 7th-grade woodshop class -- which I loved, but that was two decades ago!

Can anyone point me in the direction of Dremel sanding how-to's and tips for absolute beginners? I would be most appreciative, as I'd really like to learn how to use this great tool.

Thanks!
-Sarah

Sarah, what you are doing will take practice just use old pieces of wood to practice on and you will get the hang of it. Continue to use sheets of sand paper until you get the hang of it.

One other thing is the Dremel tool works different from other tools it works off of speed insted of force. So let the speed of the tool do its work and don't force it light strokes and don't gouge it in. If you here the motor drag down thats to much pressure.

Hi Sarah,

Doug shares some great tips. You might also want to check out Dremel's February 2009 eNewsletter, in which we covered sanding: http://dremelepk.com/dremelenewsletters/February2009/index.html.

Thanks!
