Hi,
First off, I love my dremel, it has worked beautifully for a lot of jobs for me. Right now I need to make two speaker rings out of either 1/2 or 3/4 MDF, I was going to do this with a jigsaw but I can't that good of circles with it. I saw a router attachment for the dremel and a circle cutting attachment today, and I was wondering if either of these two would work for cutting the MDF or will it only work on drywall. I will be cutting 6'-10' diameter circles.
Unfortunately, I'm still a college student so purchasing a huge router with a table is far too complicated for my situation. Thanks a lot for the help. -Ken

I think the circle cutting attachment, available by itself at WalMart I've recently discovered, would be your best bet. I'd drill a pilot hole and also a hole in the center of your circle for the pin to go in and then using the multipurpose bit, #561, wrench tightened into your Dremel, to cut out your circle. Only concern I have is if the glue in the MDF would not gum up the bit or dull it quickly. Aso, be sure to have proper ventilation when cutting it as it can irritate lungs and eyes, I've heard.

| When I got my Dremel 2 years ago, I also got the 220 piece accessory kit that had the circle cutter but I didn't use it until recently and then on a 1x10 pine board (shelf board type). I didn't drill a pilot hole all the way through since the circle is what I wanted, not to cut the hole OUT. I found that I needed to put a nail type hole/dent in the board to help the cutter stay in the right place and also circle the space several times getting progressivly deeper. While this was going on, I kept one hand on the pivot point to ensure that the point didn't wobble. My other hand held the tool to guide it. The board was on a surface that supported it and my hands kept it steady. Although the circle cutter tool holder has a shroud around the cutter, this also encouraged me to keep my fingers out!  When the circle was cut out, I used a 1/3 sheet sander with 60 grit paper in it to smooth out the edges and put a small radius on the edges. I agree that you should be cautious about breathing fumes that may come off the glue with MDF. My concern is that it could really build up on the cutter. In any case the work should be done outside or some place you can clean up easily since it really generated the sawdust!

Beleve me! drill the pivot hole. just putting a dimple for the pivot will make you PAY!

To drill the pivot hole is a great idea as you said the dimple is not good as the pin will not hold in it. And it does generate a lot of saw dust so do it outside is also a great idea. Kodiak you have covered everything and I agree...
